The Monster is an 1898 novella by American author Stephen Crane (1871–1900). The story takes place in the small, fictional town of Whilomville, New York. An African-American coachman named Henry Johnson, who is employed by the town's physician, Dr. Trescott, becomes horribly disfigured after he saves Trescott's son from a fire. When Henry is branded a "monster" by the town's residents, Trescott vows to shelter and care for him, resulting in his family's exclusion from the community. The Monster and Other Stories was the last collection of Crane's work to be published during his lifetime. In the mid-20th century, the novella received a resurgence of critical attention, especially in regard to studies of race relations in late 19th-century New York. Critic Chester L. Wolford wrote that the story "reveals truths not socially accepted for almost another hundred years. The story is, indeed, an excoriation of social conditions for the blacks, but more important ... it is an excoriation of all communities, all societies, in all places and all times." African-American author Ralph Ellison called The Monster, alongside Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "one of the parents of the modern American novel". In a 1999 article, critic James Nagel stated that "no other work of short fiction in the decade was more important thematically, and nothing until William Faulkner's "The Bear" so enriched the genre of the United States. Screenwriter and director Albert Band adapted Crane's novella for the 1959 film Face of Fire, starring Cameron Mitchell as Dr. Trescott and James Whitmore as Johnson. Unlike in the original story, Johnson was depicted as white, and his first name was changed from Henry to Monk.

I'd never read anything by Stephen Crane before, and this book was free on Amazon, so I thought I'd give it a go.Three stories are contained in this collection: the titular story, The Monster, then The Blue Hotel, and finally a story whose name I can't remember; something about mittens, I think.
I didn't enjoy the Monster very much. It had some promise, and at first I thought it would be quite similar to Frankenstein, but I was wrong. It's long and drawn out, and I didn't understand the ending.
The Blue Hotel was pretty good, though. The beginning sounds like it's going to be a really good joke: A Swede, an Easterner, and a Cowboy walk into a hotel. While not exactly a joke, it's witty and punchy, and gets its message across. A good moral at the end, too.
The third story was nice and short, but seemed a bit pointless to me. No great lessons to be learnt, no stupefying prose or great revelations about the nature of humanity. Just an ordinary day in an ordinary life.
Other than that, the book that the Kindle edition was derived from is supposed to contain illustrations, but they're not present in the Kindle edition. Which wouldn't be so bad, except that the CAPTIONS for those illustrations exist, while the illustrations themselves are not. Super dissapointing.

Stephen Crane writes with great description. I just wish he told us what happened to the monster. He leaves it to the reader to search their own soul.
One of Crane's best short stories, The Blue Hotel, is in this collection. The author of The Red Badge of Courage can really tell a good story with a lot of color. It's free--down load it and enjoy offline like I did.
Needed it for school
Do NOT buy this version if you wanted to see the original Newell illustrations or if you like to buy newly-printed facsimile editions. This is a badly-done version of the original. Going from the past edition that the reprint/publishing house used, the layout became all-messed up within this version's pages and the illustrations are SO dark that they are basically illegible. Very disappointed, will check out other versions/editions in order to read this Stephen Crane classic.
The Monster presents a parable of unselfish sacrifice in an unforgiving world. In that world, "[a] matter of conscience," as one character points out, might he "one of the blunders of virtue."
Before I knew Stephen Crane as a writer, I knew his works of poetry. I was fascinated by the brevity and depth of the prose poetry he penned. From there I grew to admire hims as a writer. This is a very good collection of some of his lesser known works but were excellent just the same. And for anyone who has never read his poetry, please download some of the free books and be prepared for whole new experience in poetry. You will not be sorry you did.
I really liked this book. I found it from a list of books Ernest Hemingway recommended to an aspiring writer, which included one of these three short stories. This collection includes The Monster, The Blue Hotel (Hemingway's recommendation), and The New Mittens. I enjoyed all three stories. I thought Stephen Crane's writing style might be too old fashioned or inaccessible, but I found the stories easy to read and quite thought-provoking. Crane can really illustrate with his words, and is effective at painting a wide range of characters. I was proud of the dad in The Monster for sticking up for Henry. I was scared of The Swede in The Blue Hotel, and I was entertained by the little boy who ruined his mittens (and could totally relate to the boy's motivation to run away from home. I'm pretty sure I pulled the same stunt when I was a kid!). Crane is a great writer, and I'm very happy I read this. Thanks for the recommendation, Hemingway!
